Finding Hope and Healing During National Recovery Month

Every September, we have a unique opportunity to come together and celebrate a message of hope that is so central to our mission here at Turning Point: the message that recovery is not only possible, but it is real.

September is National Recovery Month, a national observance that reminds us that with the right support, people can and do recover from substance use challenges. This year’s theme, “Recovery is REAL (Restoring Every Aspect of Life),” beautifully captures the essence of what this journey is all about. It’s a reminder that recovery goes far beyond just abstaining from a substance—it’s about building a life that is full, meaningful, and joyful.

A turning point in a health and wellness journey can come in many forms. For those in recovery, it’s often a moment of clarity, a final straw, or a simple decision to ask for help. It’s the moment you decide to face the past so you can build a better future.

For so many, this turning point is the start of a new chapter guided by four essential pillars of recovery:

  • Health: Recovery is about restoring your physical and mental well-being. It’s about taking care of your body, healing from past trauma, and finding new ways to cope with life’s challenges. It’s a journey back to yourself.
  • Home: A safe, stable, and supportive place to live is a cornerstone of recovery. It’s a space where healing can happen, where you can feel seen, and where you can begin to rebuild your life with a sense of security.
  • Community: The journey to recovery can feel isolating, but it is never meant to be walked alone. Community provides the connection, support, and understanding that reminds you, “You are not alone.” It’s found in support groups, with trusted friends and family, and in places where you feel a sense of belonging.
  • Purpose: Recovery is about rediscovering your purpose and finding a renewed sense of meaning in life. It’s about setting new goals, reconnecting with your passions, and pursuing a life that brings you joy and fulfillment.

Each of these pillars represents a “turning point” in its own right—a step toward a stronger, more resilient you. This month, we want to celebrate the strength and courage of the millions of Americans in recovery. We celebrate the families, friends, and service providers who offer unwavering support. We celebrate every small victory and every step forward on the journey to a restored life.

If you or someone you know is struggling, remember that recovery is not a destination, but a continuous journey. A turning point is always possible, and it’s never too late to start.
